Since establishment of KAIST in 1971, Department of Mechanical Engineering has been playing a leading role in the fields of education and research, and has been contributing significantly to the Korean industry. This annual report summarizes the general activities in education and research in 2003, which will be a reference to help further improvement of ME department.

First of all, reform of the undergraduate curriculum has started such that more experiments are included in the class to attract the interests of students and the students can select more diverse courses following the track. The department plans to increase the English lectures, which is essential to recruit the foreign students and adapt to the global era. We also encourage more ME students to participate in the oversea training program at the foreign institutes such as Univ. of Michigan, UCLA and Univ. of Iowa.

We welcome the new faculty, Prof. S.S. Lee, who is now in charge of the MEMS lab, which will open early 2004. We also welcome the research professors, visiting scholars and post doctors, who were invited through BK21 project. We plan to recruit more faculty members and invest more funds to strengthen the interdisciplinary education and research. Research area of ME department is specified recently to 6 fields to carry out the research more efficiently and to satisfy the needs of students. While the research contract maintained similar to the previous year, the publications and registered patents increased significantly in 2003. In order to provide more comfortable environment, facilities and equipments will be upgraded further and Friday concerts were held successfully for five times. I promise that extensive efforts will be made continuously to improve the environments of education and research.

I expect that capabilities of education and research of ME department will be enhanced further through the efforts of the faculty members, staffs and students.
